POSITION PURPOSE
To support the development and delivery of learning and teaching materials primarily within the Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (DS&AI) programme. Candidates are expected to provide core support to DS&AI and are required to actively contribute to the delivery and operations of other programmes across the School of Computing and Innovative Technologies.
The Teaching Assistant supports the Teaching Faculty in the effective delivery of programmes in accordance with the University’s strategy, policies, and procedures. They contribute to initiatives that promote student-centred learning and may assist with practical projects, lab and software development tasks, industry engagement activities, and other academic or engagement activities as required by the specialist programmes or in support of the BUV academic mission..
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Student learning experience
- Assist implementation of appropriate learning and support strategies to ensure student engagement and achievement.
- Assist teaching staff to supervise and deliver student projects and academic content.
- Support teaching staff to identify areas where current provision requires revision or improvement and provide support in the planning, design and development of new content and teaching materials.
- Act as basic learning mentor to students; advising on time-management, good study practice and areas of personal and/or specialised project development.
Managing people and resources
- As a teaching assistant, co-ordinate with the Programme Lead and teaching faculty to help ensure the learning needs and expectations of students at all levels of the specialist programme are met.
- Manage projects relating to own area of work and the efficient distribution of materials related to modules and teaching delivery.
- Provide support and co-ordination to students and ensure they achieve and are meeting the study standards required.
- Help co-ordinate and prepare teaching spaces and resources; physical and digital as appropriate.
Pastoral care
- Use listening, interpersonal and pastoral care skills to deal with sensitive issues concerning students and provide support.
- Identify at risk students and refer to teaching staff as appropriate for further support.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
COMPETENCIES(knowledge, skills, and abilities)
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline area. (from recognized institution) is essential.
- Sufficient specialist knowledge in software and computational methods relating to Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (DS&AI), alongside a broad understanding of core computing disciplines.
- Good to excellent proficiency in Python and key Data Science/AI libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch).
- Good to excellent knowledge of Java and object-oriented programming principles.
- Strong foundational knowledge in Discrete Mathematics and Statistics (highly preferred).
- Experience with database management and data analytics tools (e.g., SQL, NoSQL/MongoDB, Tableau, or Power BI).
- Knowledge of higher education teaching methods and an ability to connect, enthuse and engage students.
- Willingness to upskill and provide teaching support across different programmes and areas within the wider School of Computing and Innovative Technologies as required.
- Evidence of a positive contribution or engagement within the specialised discipline or programme area and willingness to share this experience with students
- Understand equal opportunity issues as they may impact on academic content and issues relating to student need.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Able to communicate concepts to a range of groups.
- Able to demonstrate independent and self-managing working styles.

- Assist teaching faculty in identifying potential improvements aspects in programme delivery.
- Support the teaching faculty in the design and delivery of modules and assessment methods considering established University practice and the specialist needs of students where necessary.
- Collaborate with the teaching faculty to ensure the efficient implementation and revision of assessment procedures to ensure good student outcomes and achievement.
- Within the limits of their responsibilities to document and report issues affecting the quality of student engagement and teaching delivery, referring any urgent matters to the teaching faculty, Programme Lead as appropriate.

- Depending on area of work (for example laboratories, workshops, studios) conduct risk assessments, take steps to reduce hazards and take responsibility for the health and safety of self and others.
- Identify issues or concerns related to the learning environment and resources, referring to more serious matters to the teaching faculty, Programme Lead as appropriate.
